As a way to understand the world, impressionism first appeared in the field of painting, and then it had a certain effect on both music and literature. Among the writers who applied impressionism techniques to creation, British writer Joseph Conrad is the representative. Painting is the art of space, while literature is the art of time. When Conrad introduced the idea of impressionism of painting to fiction, he took some pioneering attempts, which enriched the expression of novel by impressionism techniques. Beginning with the case Nostromo, this paper analyses the impressionism creation method of Conrad, so as to further study the impressionism which is ignored by literature historians as a creation method.The idea of impressionism in the field of painting is the same as its counterpart in literature, their differences lie in the way of expression. In Conrad's novels, impressionism has obvious Conrad's characteristics. In the first chapter, this paper explains the different concepts of impressionism in these fields mentioned above, namely, to express 'impression' is the aim of painting, while in the field of literature, constructing impression pictures is a means to express the subject. In Conrad's novels, the writer expressed the cognition of reality by processing the impression fragments rationally.In the novel, Conrad made his readers 'see' by constructing impression pictures, at the same time, he applied the clues that seemingly irrational to the juxtaposition and collage of these pictures, which makes the readers can't see these pictures clearly. In the second chapter of this paper, I systematically analyses the impressionism techniques which were used by Conrad in Nostromo. This paper points out that, Conrad constructed impression pictures by modeling on painting techniques of impressionism and the construction ways of spatial novels, meanwhile, he used such techniques as frequent conversion of narrative perspective, complex changes of narrative time, juxtaposition and fuzziness, which made the arrangement of these impression pictures serve for the expression of theme. This makes the thorough interpretation of the novel possible.The effect, which is obtained by using the impressionism techniques in the construction of characters and images in Nostromo, is different from the effect obtained by using traditional techniques. The third chapter analyses the artistic effects in Nostromo. By scattering the fragments about one character into plots of the novel, Conrad made the character obtain significance from a more colorful dimension. The images constructed from multiple perspectives make the image of Nostromo have multi-lateral meanings. The impression fragments in malposition are extremely suitable for displaying chaotic and complicated picture scrolls of revolution. By constructing the fragments of each political faction, Nostromo embodies the relativity and chanciness of revolution.Impressionism is not a hot topic in literature research. Through studying Nostromo, we find that impressionism can not only enrich the expression methods of literature, but also express new ideas of history and human nature. All those still have important value and significance for the contemporary people.
