Fuzziness Of Numbers And The Translation Strategies

This thesis attempts to explore the cultural influences on fuzziness of numbers and the function of fuzzy numbers in literature and communication within the theoretical framework of Fuzzy Linguistics, aiming at seeking the methods of translating fuzzy numbers under the guidance of foreignization and domestication. As a relatively new field, Fuzzy Linguistics has got more and more attention. However, it is seldom touched upon from the perspective of fuzziness of numbers. So this thesis is of creative significance.The thesis firstly discusses something about Fuzzy Linguistics, including the definitions and characteristics of fuzziness, and expounds the universality of fuzziness of languages, which gives the theoretic basis for the fuzziness of numbers discussed in the following. Secondly, the thesis discusses translation strategies—foreignization and domestication, mainly including their development, their definitions, their theoretic basis and their studies at home and abroad, which makes preparations for the discussion of methods used for translating fuzzy numbers. Finally, on the theoretic basis discussed above, the thesis mainly attempts to research into two issues: (1) Fuzziness of numbers. Numbers, mainly used for calculation, should be precise and accurate; however, the fuzziness of numbers plays an important role in literature and in communication. The fuzziness of numbers is caused by cultures to a great degree. And the thesis will explore the influence of cultures on fuzzy numbers. Besides, semantic fuzziness, rhetoric fuzziness and the function of fuzzy numbers will be discussed. (2) Translation of fuzzy numbers. Because Chinese and English numbers belong to different cultural systems, the translation between them will unavoidably arouse some problems. In order to solve these problems, certain principles and strategies guiding the translation of fuzzy numbers must be obeyed. Foreignization and domestication are the main strategies used for translating fuzzy numbers. Finally the thesis puts forward some idiographic methods useful in translating fuzzy numbers: literal translation, literal translation with notes or annotation and phonetic translation under the strategy of foreignization and revision, omission and addition of fuzzy numbers under domestication.Certain conclusions are made on the basis of the discussion: fuzzy numbers play an important role in literature and communication and the fuzziness of numbers is caused by cultures to a great degree; foreignization and domestication should not contradict themselves and they are both of great importance for translating fuzzy numbers.In one word, the thesis studies fuzziness of numbers and the translation of fuzzy numbers, which enriches the content of semantic fuzziness and has certain academic value for the study of fuzzy numbers; and the study of principles and methods for translating fuzziness of numbers has certain instructional significance in regard to the translation of fuzzy numbers.
