Thomas Hardy is one of the greatest realistic literary figure in the 19th century in England. The background of his novels is in Wessex rural areas in the Southwest of England. His novels present changes from various aspects of society when the industrial civilization invaded the rural of England.For many years, the critics studied his novels from angles of tragedy, gender and religious view and so on. In recent years, the elements of modernism in the character and environment of Hardy's novels causes interest of the people. The thesis tries to examine the creation of Hardy's tragic novels on the perspective of literary modernism.First, the paper studies the differences of Hardy and Victoria writers on the whole; second, it discusses the elements of modernism in thoughts. His creation of novels alienates from the modern society that shows anxiety of social groups in social turbulence; last, it tries to analyze tragedy of the disillusionment of tradition rationality so as to express the profoundity of disillusionment subject.In the new eva, the significance of modernism literature is greatly presented by the analysis of Hardy's novels. On the conclusion, Hardy is a realism literary figure, because of his living in the end of the 19th century, his novels shows the elements of modernism. The importance of his novels is that the development of industrial civilization can bring humanistic harmony only if this kind of civilization pays great attention to the spirits of human beings!...
