There has been a long tradition for rural gentry to combine with enlightenment and the tradition is still prosperous in Ming and Qing dynasty as it meets the requirements of many main bodies. However, the enlightenment of the rural gentry in Ming and Qing dynasty is not the simple duplicate of that in their previous dynasties. As a matter of fact, it assimilates the soul of the enlightenment of its previous dynasties, and is endowed with new spirit of Ming and Qing dynasty. We can say that the panorama of the enlightenment of the rural gentry in Ming and Qing dynasty is the result of the effect of the traditional factors and the features of that time.In view of the shortage of the research on this field, the author selects three aspects to research, which include rural gentry class and enlightenment power, the carrier and the content of enlightenment of rural gentry and characters of enlightenment of rural gentry in Ming and Qing dynasty. To be specific, the gain of enlightenment power is the academic precondition of enlightenment. The absence of official identity predicts that the enlightenment power of rural gentry is not the unilateral result of secret endowment of government or conscious Endogenesis of rural gentry. Without doubt, the multiplex resources of enlightenment power of rural gentry have influenced the configuration of the carrier and the content of the enlightenment of rural gentry. Especially under the infiltration of government power, the carrier and content of enlightenment of rural gentry gradually changes into official forms and desert its primary spirits. Besides, the introduction of western concepts and systems has induced the carrier and the content of the enlightenment of rural gentry to make some responses. Lots of inner and outer dilemmas compelled the rural gentry not only to insist on the tradition spirits as the central objective, but also impulse the changes of the parts. Therefore, the enlightenment of the rural gentry in Ming and Qing dynasty is a complex system. Based on the dual identity of the rural gentry, the author works on the ecumenical characters of the rural gentry to have a clear picture of the prospect and rules of the enlightenment of rural gentry in Ming and Qing dynasty, and to find the track of variance of knowledge configuration and behavior mode of rural gentry in Ming and Qing dynasty.
