This thesis studies the English pragmatic competence of the college students in Grade 2005, Guangxi Medical University under the help of qualitative method and quantitative method. Based on the results of test of the pragmatic competence and the interviews of the students and foreign teachers, the purposes of this thesis are to study the current situation of medical college students' English pragmatic competence and figure out the ways to improve it. The thesis points out that the second year of College English learning does not help much the improvement of the students' pragmatic competence and the development of the students' pragmatic competence is not correlated positively with the grammatical competence. The students' pragmatic competence is not integrated without some basic pragmatic knowledge and the students do not master the pragmatic knowledge well in their future medical occupation. This thesis discusses in detail how to emphasize pragmatic knowledge teaching and how to avoid pragmatic failures. Apart from these, the author puts forward another two effective ways to improve medical college students' English pragmatic competence: to apply the experience of foreign teachers' communications with the students into pragmatics teaching and to increase the input of Clinical Pragmatics and then familiarize the students with the pragmatic knowledge of their future occupation.
