| This thesis attempts to interpret The Brothers with the carnival theory so as to do a deeper and more thorough research. The preface discusses mainly about two aspects, one being the review of the researches on The Brothers by the world of letters, the other being a brief interpretation of Bakhtin's carnival theory. The body consists of three chapters. The first chapter explores the external carnival scenes presented by the text of The Brothers by beginning with the carnival images and scenes. Among the carnival characters, the protagonist of the carnival, Li Guangtou, as well as the images of clowns, fools and chives, poet Zhao, author Liu and blacksmith Tong, are mainly discussed; among the carnival festival scenes, the scenes of demonstration, violence and beauty contest are analyzed with emphasis. These scenes all present the comic style of weirdness, having the carnival air of folk festivals. Among the images of the material--- the lower part of the body, the vulgar imagery in The Brothers, the internal pursue of the carnival narration of the lower part of the body are analyzed to reflect the values and creative characteristics of the carnival narration in The Brothers. In chapter two, based on the internal structure of the text and the language of the book, the following aspects are explored: the structure of the carnival coronation-decoronation, the vulgar and bantering language and the polyphony of the narration. In this chapter the formalist characteristics of its text is analyzed and Yu Hua's pursue of writing is reflected. The structure of coronation-decoronation not only constitutes the internal structural model of the plot, but also possesses deep sense of culture and text. In the section of the carnival language, the characteristics of language which is showed by five aspects (shouting at the square, vulgar speeches, carnival numerals, irony and parody, repetition and recycle) enable the text to have carnival and aesthetic effect. In the section of polyphony narration, the kind of polyphony presented by the great dialogues and thus formed dialogicality which are inherent in the text. In order to get an overall control of uniqueness of Yuhua's carnival narration under the carnival narration circumstances of the contemporary world of letters, the third chapter makes comparative studies of carnival creative works between Yu Hua and Wang Xiaobo, between Yu Hua and Liu Zhenyun , between Yu Hua and and Mo Yan respectively. It explores the internal thought values and meaning after exploring the value and meaning of the text form. The sufferance of life and the salvation of love, which represent Yuhua's ideas of miseries, embody his extreme pursue underlying his carnival narration. The conclusion analyzes the causes of his carnival narration and the meanings and values of interpretation of The Brothers by Bakhtin's carnival theory. |
