As a famous poet in the history of modern Chinese literature, Xu Zhimo was always an excellent learner. Along his life, he left three poem collections and a lot of translation poems, of which the vast majority were his experiments and trials on the poetry art both in Chinese and in Western.Western poetry has made a deeply impact on him. He had a full range of learning and reference to the rhythm of Western poetry, and finally succeeded in using these poem creating skills in Chinese poetry, which greatly helped the Chinese modern- poetry's transformation and forming in various aspects. This article researched into the art ofrhythm in his poetry from three areas——metrical foot, rhyme, and line of poetry, contained both concept analysis and close reading, and deeply analyzed the characteristic and creativeness in the rhythm of his poetry:He paid much attention on the metrical foot in his poetry, and the use of metrical foot in his poetry was natural and neat, reached a very high level of art; and he also turned the the feature in English poetry such iambus, trochee, etc, into the rhythm feature in Chinese poetry which based on natural accent. In the aspect of rhyme, he was a conscious pathfinder on modem rhyme. According to the characteristic of Chinese language, he used various kinds of rhyme pattern in Western poetry, such as alliteration, internal rhyme, and rhyme. His single poem always contained more than one rhyme pattern, even mixed lines within and without rhyme. He offered a model on the rhyme of modern Chinese poetry. On the line of poetry, he imported Western variation patterns on line of poetry, such as "wave", "Indentation" and "concave", these brought the aesthetic effect not only in appearance, but also in rhythm. He used forming methods as rhythm methods in poetry, such as enjambment, rejet, and provide a special kind of charm.Xu Zhimo's conscious experiments on rhythm provided modern Chinese poetry a musical modern rhythm pattern. This is a valuable experience in the art of modern Chinese poetry, and worth studying carefully.
