Two trends have emerged in the field of Modern and contemporary Western intentionality research. English-American philosophy of mind based on analytical philosophy and Cognitive Science, which follows the route with different traditions and phenomenal Intentionality theory, has not only created its own language system and ways of expression, but also raised many new issues, opened up new fields of development and research and developed the unique way of deepening intentionality research on the basis of keeping and developing worthwhile traditions in intentionality research. Nowadays, the relationship between consciousness and intentionality, typical in this research, has naturally become a focus in the philosophy of mind. The philosophers of mind in different times have expressed theirs own understanding of relationship between consciousness and intentionality. Based on the relationship between consciousness and intentionality by analytic philosophical traditions, this thesis tries to figure out the essence of the relationship between consciousness and intentionality, through investigating the hot issues of the relationship between consciousness and intentionality. The thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter puts forward an important issue that has to be dealt with in English-American philosophy of mind, i.e. the issue of the relationship between consciousness and intentionality, pointing out the research method taken, the logical framework of the article, the main point and the innovations of it, with introductory accounts of what is meant by 'consciousness' and 'intentionality' in English-American philosophy of mind Then, influential perspectives on intentionality which have emerged in both phenomenological (chapter two) and analytic (chapter three) philosophical tradition are sketched, so as to highlight basic issues about the relationship of consciousness and intentionality, and provide some of the background against which they have been understood. Chapter four discusses the key points of the relationship between consciousness and intentionality in English-American philosophy of mind in order to explain the importance of it. The last chapter is the conclusion.
