Graphic Design is information expressed by visual images. In a word, graphic design is not only a process of designing semiotic, but also a process of refining, expressing and decoding symbols. Because of graphic design spread in larger scales and more fields, the contents and measurements of the design is getting abundant. Moreover, designing activities is not just confined to a fixed field. However, the designing practice and research are developed from a interdisciplinary, comprehensive perspective, which requires rational thinkings and comprehensive analysis on graphic design. The principle of symbols is therefore, to study the graphic design from other angles.This research, mainly based on the theory of semiotic, studys the graphic design so as to provide a relatively readable and scientific designing method. Studying on the theory of symbols is, in one way ,to conduct theoretical instructions on the elements of graphic design according to the characteristics of symbols, in another, to obtain implications on design thinking from the principles of symbols. This thesis, the application of symbol theory, analyzes the symbols from the symbol phenomena in graphic design as existing designing elements , explores the components of symbols in graphic design and states the applications of symbol theory in design according to case studys and the basic rules which should be followed in design. Studying symbols and enquiring the relationship between principle of symbols and graphic design are helpful to learn the deep meaning of graphic design, to get further understanding on the nature of design and to have a good master of scientific designing methods. Symbol study is one discipline in advertising. Therefore, studying on symbols and finding the nature and features are good for utilizing the principles of symbols in graphic design.
