This paper takes Hugo's long novel L'homme qui rit as the main research object. Referring to the modern body theory, the paper explores multiple reasons of "Gwinplaine's Death" through in-depth text analysis. The author holds that the reasons of hero's death include: the destruction of lust, the destiny on which the power plays tricks, the laughing face symbolizing, embarrassed life situation of "being watched". All these reasons are related to "body". Therefore, in fact there is a clue of body narrative under the external tortuous plot. On the basis of text analysis, this paper extends the vision to Hugo's other works and his literature ideas, then educes that Hugo's writing is one invention which stands on body ethic. He writes his gigantic body energy into literary works. And more importantly, Hugo carries forward "ugliness" which is the turning point for arts through the description of "grotesque body". It has great apocalyptic signification in aesthetics. This paper includes five plates.Introduction: "Giant Hugo and L'homme qui rit". At present, study of Hugo has made the rich achievement. However, in China, research on L'homme qui rit still rests on obsolete and superficial social-historical analysis or general anatomy about the principle of "contrasting beauty with ugliness". Foreign research results are also relatively few, lack of systematic and deeply study. According to this research situation, this paper explores the body narrative of L'homme qui rit from view of "body". Based on this, the paper discussing the effects of "body" factors in Hugo's invention. This research is just the region which scholars at home and abroad haven't emphasized.Part 1, "The destruction of lust: Dea·Gwinplaine·Josiane". Paper begins with two Greek myths, then analyzes hero's ponderosity of mortal body in the face of two kind of women. Gwinplaine gets into the laceration between emotion and desire. Ultimately, he can but be up against the dual destruction of emotion and desire. Part 2, "Laughing face: the appearance of power and the dissident cage". The "laughing face" brings Gwinplaine not only the destiny on which the power plays tricks, but also the life situation of " being watched " which going with "body dissimilation". "Laughing face" is just the appearance of power and the dissident cage. And "suicide" is just the revolt against the tricks of power and the situation of "being watched" by the end of "body".Part 3, "Standing on body ethic: the bodily factors in Hugo's writing ". The article's view isn't limited to L'homme qui rit, but also considers Hugo self and his other works. Paper discusses surrounding two aspects: first, the thesis discusses the relation between writer's bodily energy and literature invention combining with Hugo's legendary life , the characteristic of giant. Second, referring to some theoretic works about "grotesque", the paper discusses Hugo's theoretic contribution and literary achievement on "grotesque". "Grotesque" is manifested obviously as "grotesque body" in Hugo's works. "Grotesque body" not only brings multiple aesthetic experience in the novel, more importantly, it leads to the discovery of "ugliness"."Epilogue, unique style" . Hugo thinks "the content and form is the same life phenomenon, beauty is one integrated mass", and this paper holds that Hugo is a litterateur with unique style. It is a relatively new method to study literary works with body theory.
