| The thesis makes a discussion about the necessity of college English grammar teaching for non-English majors with its focus on the issues "should grammar be taught and learnt" and "how can grammar be taught and learnt". It first makes a literature review of English grammar teaching, with its emphasis on studies at home and abroad concerning status and approaches of English grammar teaching followed by an overview of the state of English grammar teaching at home and abroad. After that, it shows current situation of college English grammar teaching in China from three perspectives: problems in college English grammar teaching, teachers' grammar teaching and students' grammar learning. On one hand, some teachers consider communicative language teaching means the elimination of grammar teaching and they subjectively make the two teaching approaches opposed; some have a misunderstanding about students' grammatical competence and think of grammar teaching as a task finished in middle schools; on the other hand, college students are quite negative about grammar teaching; besides, as a result of the complete canceling of grammar from CET-4 and CET-6, grammar teaching has almost disappeared from college English teaching. With a view to the above issues, an empirical study is conducted using an interview, a questionnaire and a grammar proficiency test to validate the necessity of college English grammar teaching for non-English majors from three dimensions: "teachers' attitudes to grammar teaching", "students' attitudes to grammar teaching" and "objective grammar test". A final consensus from the studies in three dimensions is arrived at: college English grammar teaching is not only necessary, but also urgent for non-English majors. |
