| William Wordsworth is one of the representatives of the Romantics. His works depict the close relationship between Man and Nature, Man and Man and Man and Society. Over the past two centuries, his works have been discussed by a variety of critics from various perspectives. There seems to be no more space left for the criticism of them.With the rapid development of industrialization and urbanization, the environmental crisis is getting more and more severe. The academic circle of literary theories starts to reconsider literary works from the ecological perspective, trying to find a new way from literary works to solve the environmental crisis. With the birth of ecocriticism, a new field of reading Wordsworth has been opened up.This thesis is focused on the close reading of some parts of Wordsworth's The Prelude, The Excursion, The Lyrical Ballads and some of his short poems and prose, giving an analysis of Wordsworth's ecological ethics and ecological consciousness. In this thesis, Wordsworth's interest in nature is identified as an ecological interest by linking it to the environmental and cultural changes in modern times. Chapter One is an introduction, giving a brief introduction to ecocriticism and the structure of this research paper. Chapter Two deals with Wordsworth's ecological awareness by analyzing his presentation of the relationship between man and nature in his poetry. Chapter Three analyzes the urban nature in Wordsworth poetry, revealing his lamentation on the social relationship from the social-ecological prospective. Chapter Four reveals Wordsworth's awareness of animal rights and nature rights by reading his "The Hart-Leap Well", "Nutting", and his letters and sonnets on Kendal and Windermere Railway. Chapter Five serves as a conclusion, presenting the significance of reading Wordsworth from an ecological perspective for the modern age. |
