Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales have been a well-known literature in the world. For both children and adults, Andersen belongs to the world's greatest cultural geniuses. Andersen's stories have been always an object of many studies. His works form a traditional and modern platform naturally and permanently applied in educational technologies, serving as a revolt against routine stereotypes and inspiring creative and revolutionary ideas in children and adults as well. Being a typical writing for children, it has exerted a great educational influence upon the proper formation of children's morality and value standard. With a history of more than one hundred years since its publication, his monumental work has won popular and enduring acceptance among its readers and brought great enlightenment of beauty to children as well as to adults.This study devotes to Andersen's fairy tales, intending to analyze the characteristics of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales from two aspects: ideological contents and artistic techniques. Firstly, Andersen's fairy tales are different from traditional ones in ideological contents. He always favored tragic theme, challenged the attitude towards female characters in traditional fairy tales and integrated the humanity of love into his fairy tales and took multiple stands when telling the stories. Secondly, Andersen not only developed his own unique way to narrate stories but also created his fairy tales in views of poetic language, type and structure.This thesis consists of five chapters in unity of a research focus on Andersen's fairy tales from two perspectives: ideological contents and artistic techniques.Chapter I is the introduction. It includes the purpose of this thesis and literature review of fairy tales and Andersen's fairy tales. This chapter first begins with fairy tales'studies from different approaches in general and then goes to Andersen's fairy tales studies.Chapterâ…¡attempts to make a sketchy biography of Andersen and a general survey of his fairy tales, and introduces main attributes of Andersen's fairy tales. In Chapterâ…¢, it illustrates Andersen's fairy tales from his ideological contents. Among these researches, the thesis focuses on the theme of death and cruelty, and the biblical approach is used to analyze Andersen's fairy tales so as to grasp the essential motif of love implied between the lines. The theme of female characters'quest in Andersen's fairy tales can be inquired into thoroughly.In Chapterâ…£, it studies and analyzes the artistic techniques of Andersen's fairy tales. The thesis tries to discuss the artistic writing techniques used in Andersen's fairy tales, reflect its poetic flavor, narrative structure and narrative device.Chapterâ…¤is a conclusion of the distinct characteristics of Andersen's fairy tales, trying to provide an insight into the intellectual excellence of Andersen's works.
