Lu Xun's Appeal To "Understanding" Revealed In His Essays

Studies on Lu Xun's essays have been flourished and overflowed. The diversity of research approaches and results reinforces the significance of his essays. We have to appreciate those studies and admit their positive achievement to further the understanding of Lu Xun. However, we have to realize their historical and theoretical limitedness. Traditional studies of Lu Xun's essays focus on his thought revealed in his essay, literary values and stylistic essence. That is to say, the research emphasizes the unique ideological and artistic achievements of his essays. However, there is a blind spot in these studies, that is, they ignore the unique experience of survival prevailing in these essays, and its connotative meanings, which breeds the modal of existence in Lu Xun's essays. In other words, a substantial amount of research has overlooked an important and effective inspective dimension: the modal of existence.Literature is always about human beings, and the modal of human existence should always be the primal concern in literature. Literature is rooted in people's living conditions. It always concerns man's existence and moral spirit, so are the essays of Lu Xun. This dissertation attempts to explore the long existed existential complex in Lu Xun's appeal to "understanding" in his literary world, so as to analyze his choice in literary style, and how he represents the "incommunicability between human beings" in his essays, and how he achieve a kind of "communication" by deconstructing the barriers that block human understanding. Consequently, this dissertation is going to shed light on Lu Xun's spiritual world.In the light of existed research this dissertation attempts to explore Lu Xun's appeal to "understanding" in his essays from the existentialistic and hermeneutic approaches. It consists of three parts:Introduction includes a general literary survey of Lu Xun. It will define the meaning of "understanding" in Lu Xun's essays.The main part consists of: Lu Xun's existential modal - from the perspective of his appeal to "understanding" to analyze his choice of literary style.Secondly, this dissertation is going to explore the appeal to "understanding" so as to analyze how Lu Xun manages to be "present," and how he achieves the appeal of understanding through the revelation of the barriers between different men as well as man and environment.Conclusion has briefly discussed the comprehensive significance of Lu Xun's appeal to "understanding" revealed in his essays...
