Ernest Hemingway is a writer of the twentieth century who is well known for his narration of war and cultivating of men characters. His works both characterized by"male-centered"and this"center"forms sharp contrast with the cultivating of women characters in the novels, which has made his works focus of the critics'attention. In Hemingway's works, women characters are always in the dominated position, being"the Other"of men. A Farewell to Arms, The Sun Also Rises, and The Garden of Eden have presented three typical bound women characters as Catherine Barkley, Brett Ashley and Catherine Hill. They represent three kinds of women in bondage—the woman of endurance in biological bondage, the struggling woman in patriarchy, and the rebellious woman in mythology bondage. Their experience has reflected the living condition of the women of the twentieth century after the war, and the social problems of females craving for solution.
