Heart of Darkness is an adventure story, based on what Joseph Conrad has experienced in Congo. Along with Marlow's journey up to the Congo River, the novel mainly describes the dramatic psychological transformations of Marlow, Kurtz and three minor characters, which is categorized to Sigmund Freud's psychological structure. Freud's theory of psychological structure puts emphasis on tripartite relationship among id, ego and superego and the problems brought by the unstable relationship among them. In Heart of Darkness, the unstable psychological structure is mainly embodied in Marlow, Kurtz and three minor characters, whose experiences illustrate the perniciousness of an unrestrained id. By virtue of Freud's psychological structure, this thesis intends to illustrate the paramount importance of a harmonious psychological tripartite structure so as to shed some lights on people who are facing with the same psychological problems.
