Commentary About Gao Muhong's Literature Creation

Gao Muhong was born in Shanxi and spent most of time and energy in his lifetime in Shanxi—a well-loved place. Gao Muhong once worked in outside areas in 1920s and 1930s for a short time. Moreover even if he was out of the hometown, he still cherished Shanxi, frequently published his articles in Shanxi's some publications, and devoted his enthusiasm to the Shanxi literature. With unceasing development of The May 4th"New Culture Movement, he joined "Hurricane cooperation" which maintained independence and freedom as new thoughts and culture of "The May 4th Movement" have a profound influence on Gao Muhong. He was one of the earliest members of "Hurricane cooperation", and also a primary one. In his early period works, he asserted abstruse literature style because of the west symbolism effect, but he changed his mind deeply after reading some progressive books named "Communism ABC" "Communism and the Communist Party of China" "Elementary Capital". At that time he joined the Communist Party of China as communism has a deep influence on him. His literature style began to convert to popularization. Gao Muhong is a writer with very complex literature characteristics. Classic poetry and modern literature have a profound and lasting effect on his literature creation. In addition, west symbolism has an important role in his creation, in which "evil and beauty style" nourished and enriched his works deeply. In his lifetime, he actively took part in associations, foundation of literature publication, and cultivation of potential writers. He made a big contribution for the development of Shanxi literature and China's modern literature treasury.The article is divided into introduction and four chapters. Three literature thoughts advocated by Gao Muhong are analyzed in the chapter I . He asserted the writing way of soul and nature, and pursued literature pathway of popularization, and emphasized the thoughts of literature in harmony with the time. In chapter II, several important attributes which impacted on Gao Muhong's creation are expounded as followed: Firstly, the profound influence of China's ancient poems and modern writers on Gao Muhong is explained. Because both Gao Changhong and "Hurricane cooperation" had played a special role in Gao Muhong's literature career, it is discussed literature in section III, Finally, the influence of west symbolism on him is elaborated. In chapter III, his early works which conveyed unique image world as well as the fairyland and dreamland writing traits are analyzed deeply. Then, Sino-Japanese war culture in his late period works are explained detailedly. The transformation and reasons of Gao Muhong's literature style are elaborated comprehensively, which is complex and diverse. Among these reasons, there are social environment, individual and literature itself and so on. Gao Muhong's contribution to shanxi new literature and his status as well as significance in China's literature history are summarized synthetically. By the elaboration of chapterIV, systematical analysis and research of his works, and also excavation of his works connotation, an objective evaluation of his literature creation, we can have more comprehensively profound understanding and assurance to the writer—Gao Muhong.
