The Application Of Addition And Omission To Chinese-English Translation Of Political Writing

The translation of political writings plays an important role in international arena for improving national image, publicizing national policy and etc. This thesis runs its systematic discussion on it and discusses how two techniques--addition and omission are employed in the direction of Nida's Redundant Information Theory, hoping to help translator improve the quality of C-E translation of political writings.Through contrast and analysis of English and Chinese, translators can understand the differences and connections between them. During translation, it is necessary to adopt some methods to satisfy functional equivalence. Addition and omission as two techniques are useful, which are the methods of "Lengthening". "Lengthening" does not mean that the translator can have the power to rewrite the translating materials by adding information that he or she considers useful and omitting information that is too hard to understand.As for the many types of additions, this paper focuses on five aspects: Addition of Grammatical Words, Addition Because of Rhetorical Needs, Addition Because of the Speaking Tone, Addition Because of Different Political and Cultural Background and Addition Because of the Requirement of Sentence Restructuring. Omission as a translation technique is also used in C-E translation of political writings. The paper is concerned about it from the following three aspects: Omission Required Because of Repetition, Omission Because the Meaning Has Been Implied or Shown and Omission Because of Grammatical Requirement.The thesis is composed of six chapters altogether. Such fundamental knowledge of translation as nature of translation, principle of translation and techniques of translation, etc are introduced in Chapter One. Chapter Two discusses characteristics of political writing and several techniques employed in political writing translation. The third chapter deals with Nida's Redundant Information Theory, which includes techniques like addition and omission. This theory laid a solid foundation for addition and omission by giving examples. Chapter Four and Five are important chapters in the thesis. The fourth chapter dwells on the application of addition in political writing C-E translation. The fifth chapter is about how omission is applied in political writing C-E translation. Then comes the last chapter of this thesis.
