The College English Teaching is always bewildered by'time consuming and low effectiveness', especially the vocabulary is the central problem. In order to find an effective way to improve the achievements of vocabulary study of non-English majors, the author chooses the topic'An Empirical Study on the Theory of Interface and related Techniques of Vocabulary Acquisition of Non-English Majors in Beihua University'and also the freshmen in 2006 in Chinese department and history department of Beihua University were chosen to do the contrastive experiments. The experiment uses the scientific quasi-educational English teaching method, tries to testify the hypotheses that the related techniques of vocabulary acquisition guided by the theory of interface can improve the achievements of vocabulary study of non-English majors. The result shows that the vocabulary study guided by the theory of interface and related techniques is effective.The whole thesis is developed into five chapters.Chapter One is a brief introduction to the research questions and the significance of the vocabulary leaning and acquisition. The factors that affected vocabulary acquisition are pointed out.Chapter Two is the theoretical review of interface theory and its relevant theories. Starting with a distinction of some relevant terms as acquisition, learning and second language acquisition, presents a general review on the SLA research and the teaching approaches of second or foreign language and then come to the theory of Krashen's Monitor Model, Interface position, Interlanguage, The MMC system, Learner autonomy, Cooperative learning, Incidental vocabulary acquisition and so on. In the process of English vocabulary teaching and learning the author thinks that the interface theory can be used in Chinese context.Chapter Three is devoted to the methodology of the vocabulary acquisition. It tries to analyze the historical tracks of interface and non-interface that embodied in the main approaches and methods in language teaching. It discusses the way that the different teaching methods master and apply the vocabulary learning and acquisition to the practice.Chapter Four as the body of methodology of the research, devotes itself to the study of the interface theory and related techniques of vocabulary acquisition. In this part first I conducted a survey on the strategies of vocabulary study, the results show that the students are eager to find an effective way to the vocabulary study. Then I did the experiment includes subjects, instruments, the approach, the design, the model, the procedures, data-collection and date-analysis of the experiment. It employs a comparative empirical design in order to provide an answer to the key research questions: the interface theory and related techniques of vocabulary acquisition is an effective approach to cultivating the overall vocabulary learning ability of the non-English majors.Chapter Five presents a general conclusion of the whole thesis. The interface theory and related techniques of vocabulary acquisition is an effective approach to cultivating the overall vocabulary learning ability of the non-English majors. And through the interview we can get the conclusion that this method is welcomed by the students of non-English majors.We can conclude that learning and acquisition are the same aspect of the one problem, they can not be divided into two parts. Not a single one of the two can be dispensed with. The vocabulary can be learned and also can be acquired in the process of effective teaching and learning by using the interface theory and related techniques of vocabulary acquisition.
