As for a conductor, solid academic knowledge and practical experience of conducting motion affects directly how well he/she can develop and exhibit his/her professional ability. Conducting motion has its obvious function of transferring information, which conveys the music expression in a conductor's mind to the object of conducting motion, that is, the players or singers, through the conductor's body movements, so that the music score notes gain their real acoustical meaning. This thesis tries to guide and explain the principle of conducting motion by using the theory of symbolic function and symbolic character demonstrated in Symbolism. This thesis discusses the essential nature, function structure, and application principle of conducting motion by using the concept of symbol, and by combining the corresponding theory of music aesthetic psychology it draws the conclusions that the essential nature of conducting motion is the symbolic token of intrinsic sentiment of human being, the conducting process is that a conductor expresses the aesthetic experience of himself/herself while he/she conducts and re-creates the music works, and conducting motion is the externalization of emotional conception and artistic conceit of conducting, and the syntheses of expression means of conducting.
