Along with the neorealist trend, Calvino appeared in the literary world by his work The Parth to the Nest of the Spiders (1947) which makes name for him. But after that, there was an obvious lag period (1947-1952) in his novel writing. The communist identity and the following neorealist writing demand tied Calvino down. After failing to write several socialist novels, Calvino changed his writing style from novel to romance in order to get rid of his creation dilemma. The change shows in the novels written in the. fifties by Calvino who are sophisticated in fairy tales art. Fairy tales, reality and philosophy are in perfect harmony in these novels, and the magnum opus of which is Our Ancestors trilogy.Calvino with too much social responsibility devoted his critic and serious meditation about Italian social realistic problem in the so called 'fairy tale novel' trilogy. There are some main topics among them, such as the fissility and deformity of the human being made by the modern society, the loneliness, unease, isolation and the loss of existent consciousness in the modern material world. Our Ancestors trilogy is also called 'pursuing' trilogy. The author put the subject of being significance as the trilogy's topic: pursuing survival right in the The nonsexist knight, pursuing the complete humanity in the The Cloven Viscount, pursuing the complete road to the unindividualism in the The Baron in the trees. Therefore, the three novels can be seemed as the three stages to the freedom. Our Ancestors trilogy is not only the classic representation of the 'fairy tale novel', but also with a far-reaching influence. My thesis is trying to put Calvino's writing crisis as a breakthrough point, following the trilogy text to analyze his social attention and the philosophic thinking in the novels, in order to get a deep understand of the art charm of Calvino's 'fairy tale novel'.
