If the fate of genius is always more unfortunate than ordinary people, modern literati Su Man-shu is just like this. When mentioned today, he is either entirely forgotten by history, or extremely misrepresented by legend. Well, when alive? He was not only ephemeral, but also frustrated. But those exquisite poetry left, giving rise to beautiful thoughts of readers.However, just stopping in the level of aesthetic impression, the truth of Su Man-shu is still far away. Only by taking Su man-shu and his works back to the true history, it will be possible to develop critical thinking, analytical judging and sentimental dialogue . Basing on this consideration, the thesis re-interprets Su Man-shu in a different perspective.According to the Chinese classical criticism thought, the thesis mainly adopts the study methods of textual research, psychology, impacting Analysis, formalism. Meanwhile, it refers to critical pattern of cultural study so that Su Man-shu's blurry image becomes much clearer. By analyzing Su Man-shu's Sino-Japanese family background, which brings him unspeakable suffering, we are able to explain his eccentric behavior and uncanny character, and understand his unique cultural style and specific cultural ideals. When referring to literature history, the thesis makes a more objective reassessment of his value on the foundation of textual reading and sociological analyzing; when summing up his significance to cultural history, the thesis reviews and evaluates Su Man-shu's specific cultural activities, furthermore, introduces more complex standards such as tradition and modernism, East and West, and cultural self-reference. Then, we revealed the differences and complexities of the process of modernization between China and Japan.In order to arouse more profound thought and discussion, this thesis selects the case of Su Man-shu, an intellectual with cross-cultural backgrounds, expressing standpoints on hot issues. For instance, the literary context of China's new generation, the reorientation of intellectuals in the transition period, the nation's cultural insights and self-reference in modernization process.
