Quine's Perspective Of Truth And Its Theoretical Impact

Quine believes that logic takes the pursuit of being true as its responsibility,and it takes research of truth and logical truths systematically.As an important part of Quine's philosophical system,his discussion on truth and logical truths repudiates the theory of truth of logical empiricism and of linguistics on logic, which have influenced a lot in the logical field.With having certain theoretical value, Quine's theory is worthful for us to draw on.This thesis will center around Quine's probing into truth and logical truths,to give detailed analysis and fair assessment based on Quine's original works and the clues of the development of his perspective to truth.The thesis has three parts in all.The first part is about Quine's criticism and inheritance to the traditional perspectives to truth,like the correspondence theory ,the coherence theory and Tarski's semantic theory of truth.We will find out the retrospective sources of those perspectives as well as introduce their contents and their advantages and disadvantages.Also this part is focus on Quine's assessment to them and their impact on Quine.The second part is about the analysis of Quine's concept of holism knowledge,the truth of pragmatism,the logical truths,and disquotation on detail.As the same,we will clearly convey their developing history,the contents and the assessment as possible as we can.The status of Quine's perspective of truth in the history of philosophy and the effect of Quine's theories will be expatiated in the third part.The new value of this thesis stays on the systematical collection and machining on Quine's theories of truth based on his original works.The rich materials and informative content are presented in this thesis.Moreover,the evaluation to Quine's work is an innovative point.During the process writing this paper,the author have tried to devote pantoscopic world ,reliable materials,impartial evaluation and appropriate evaluation.However,there might be some shortcomings inevitably in this thesis,for Quine's profounding and complex theory of truth.
