Research On The Image Of Scholars In Liao Zhai Zhi Yi

Liao Zhai Zhi Yi is one of the most valuable works of the classical Chinese ancient shortstories. Pu Songling not only described the world of that time vividly, but also created all kinds of images. Among them, the group image of"scholar"is worthy for us to pay attention to. The issue will be discoursed in four parts.The first part is to make the concept of the"scholar"clear during comparing with the concept of the"general scholar", and get a conclusion that the scholar in this thesis is those who are trying best to the examination but still fail. The second step is to sum up the history and current situation that the scholar image of the Liao Zhai Zhi Yi be studied: it demonstrates a rising situation, consisting of the comment by the literators of the Qing dynasty, the simple comment in the history books of literature novel, and the various thesis and monograph in the modern time.The second part, analyzing their tragedy destiny under the background of that time by complying with the real world around them. Their examination road has been full of hardship; and they have to bear the heavy financial burden and low social position too.The third part, dispite of the hardship of the reality, the scholars in the Liao Zhai Zhi Yi are still not lose the characteristic of the traditional literators. They are still the believers of the Confucian School, insist on the"filial piety","loving and respecting one's brother","benevolence","righteousness","etiquette","wise","trust", and so on. Comparatively, scholars are comparatively faint in the love stories, demonstrate a lack and pity of"love".The fourth part, analyzing the intimate relationship between the scholars of the Liao Zhai Zhi Yi and the author Pu songling. The scholars are the"inverted image"of Pu songling's life——from the success in his early age , to the lonely and depressed situation of the later stage. In spirit, Pu songling put his own temperament and morality on the scholars who are created by him, make those images glorious. As a literator in the low level of society, Pu Songling has experienced all kinds of hardship, so during the period of the creation, he gives a happy end to the scholars in the Liao Zhai Zhi Yi. But this happiness is just a way of self-conforting in his anxiety, a deep and desolate atmosphere firmly covers in this comforting and expressing of solution. This is to say, the tragedy of the scholars in the Liao Zhai Zhi Yi, is the tradegy of Pu songling, and is the tradegy of all the literators in that time.
