As a representative "lost generation" novelist, Hemingway is famous not only for his code hero images, "iceberg principle" writing style, and brief language, but also for his psychological exploration of the effects of the "disillusionment" and "death" upon his code hero's conscious development. In his course of writing, Hemingway constantly explores the contribution of the intrinsic motivation to his code heroes' death awareness. Generally speaking, Hemingway's exploration of death awareness begins with a young boy called Nick Adams in "Indian Camp", after a prolonged period of the "disillusionment" represented by Jake Barnes in The Sun Also Rises and Frederic Henry in A Farewell to Arms, Robert Jordan in For Whom the Bell Tolls marks a diversion from a pessimistic sort of death awareness and the disillusioned way of living, and he in particular embodies a favorable impact of the intrinsic motivation (moral code for Hemingway code heroes) on the development of death awareness. Finally, Santiago in The Old Man and the Sea presents a best explanation of Hemingway code heroes' success in transcending the self with the intrinsic motivation featuring the "undefeated" spirit. As mentioned above, my paper will mainly research on the intrinsic motivation and its effects on the development of Hemingway code heroes' death awareness, dividedinto three stages--childhood, manhood, and old age. As for the approach, I willconcentrate on Hemingway's "principle of iceberg" and explore on him and his code heroes' emotions with certain images. As for the structure, my essay is divided into six chapters: with the first being an introduction, the second a brief introduction to Hemingway code hero's death awareness, and the third, the fourth, and the fifth chapters being the main part which analyzes the three developing stages of Hemingway code hero's death awareness, and the last chapter being a conclusion of my whole paper.
