Recently tourism has become an important industry undergoing rapid growth on a global scale, especially in China. And more attention has been paid to the study of English tourism discourse, by which people from different nations tend to get to know the culture and tradition of the destination. At the same time, the interest in applying Systemic-Functional Grammar to discourse analysis has been on the rise both at home and abroad, since the focus of the Systemic-Functional Grammar is communication with language, which is exactly the purpose of English tourism discourse.Based on the theory of Systemic-Functional Grammar, this thesis aims to make a contrast between BIs (Brief Introductions to Tourism Attractions) and TAs (Tourism Advertisements) in terms of process type, modal elements and thematic elements. To ensure the reliability and validity of the study, the quantitative analysis is employed to examine how and to what extent English tourism discourse is presented from the perspective of Systemic-Functional Grammar. Comparison is made on the similarities and disparities between BIs and TAs in terms of the Three Metafunctions and Register. A better understanding of the characters of English tourism discourse can be got, which will facilitate reading and translation. Moreover, the former linguists mainly studied the English tourism discourse in terms of cross-cultural communication or error analysis, while the Systemic-Functional Grammar emphasizes discourse, which undoubtedly enlarges the field of the scientific research. Meanwhile, the application of Halliday's theory to the practical study of the special discourse—English tourism discourse, proves its reliability and validity.
