America is a pluralistic country, on one hand, each person, such as Asian Americans, Spanish Americans and native Americans, are actively accepting or being passively assimilated by the European American culture. On the other hand, they are making great effort which is partly embodied in literary works to maintain and enrich their culture. African American literature is not only a branch of African American oral tradition. As a wonderful work of American literature garden with hundreds of flowers, African American literature sends out unique glamour.The researching goals of the studies are as follows:1. Revaluating the importance of the Negro and Black English. The Negro are always considered to be a low-grade race according to the rule that the status of language user determines the status of that language, obviously, the Black English is a kind of low-grade language. This opinion is totally wrong. There is no "noble" or "humble" in races, neither is language. In fact, the Black English is a kind of unique langue and is widely utilized by every walk of life in America. What's more, it has already become an essential factor of American Standard English. With its unique glamour and hearty vitality, the Black English is again highly valued, and the reason is the flourish of black literature.2. Rediscovering Zora Neola Hurston and her Their Eyes Were Watching God. Zora Neola Hurston is a famous novelist, folklorist and anthropologist. Their Eyes Were Watching God is Miss Hurston's best legend. Its language is poetic and musical, it is organized loosely but coherent. Sparkling discourses of the novel are extensively humorous and harmonious in the whole text, in which a large number of black people's dialects and idioms are used to display the potential beauty of black language and culture heritage.3. Fulfilling the self-definition of woman and mold new independent woman character. This novel, conveying Miss Hurston's reflection on outlet for women, narrates around a black woman Janie's lifetime and her three marriages for molding a classic image-Janie, who bravely revolts against common customs and strives for the right as a human being. Janie finally fulfills the definition of self through her own experience from confusion, oppugning to apperception, awakening of the female self.Their Eyes Were Watching God is a work of poesy of trickling from start to finish. The language characteristics and other narrative strategy in it make Their Eyes Were Watching God a classic in the history of American literature after decades of neglect.
