On The Orientation Towards Foreignization From The Perspective Of Cultural Fusion

With the increasing importance in the international exchange, translation is regarded as not only a necessary means of language transmitting, but also an important process of cultural spreading. Since the 1990s, the translation studies have taken the"cultural turn"and more attention has been paid to the study of translation from the cultural perspective. This has provided us with a wider stage to study domestication and foreignization. As two major translation strategies, domestication and foreignization are both necessary for cross-cultural communication. However, it is domestication that holds the dominant position in first three translation booms in Chinese literary translation history. From the fourth translation boom, foreignization has begun to draw more attention that it deserves. This is mainly due to the more and more significant trend of cultural fusion. This worldwide trend of cultural development not only provides the incentives but also the necessary conditions for the orientation towards foreignization in literary translation. A case study of two versions of The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn from the syntactic, lexical and dialect dimensions will be demonstrated to show how cultural fusion promotes the shift in translation strategies from domestication-orientation to foreignization-orientation in Chinese literary translation.
