Nowadays, the study on interpretation still lags a long way behind that of translation. Attention in the national and international interpretation field is often limited to the cultivation and enhancement of interpretation skills, the study of interpretation teaching methodology and evaluation of interpretation. There are also some researchers dedicating themselves to the study of the process of interpretation or the development of interpretation theories and models. However, the study concerning the preparation for interpretation is far less. What's more, the existing study stays only at the methodology level, which is mostly summarized from interpreters' experience. The researchers attempt to provide general methodology guidelines. This thesis first introduces the concept of preparation for interpretation and elaborates on its essentiality. Preparation for interpretation, an indispensable process in the practice of interpretation, will determine whether the interpretation practice is successful or not to a great extent. Therefore, the preparation work should be carried out in accordance with the particular interpretation task. Different categories of interpretation require different emphasis on the preparation work and hence different strategies. Then, in the thesis, category theories are introduced into the studies. Category theories remain important topics in cognitive linguistics. From the classic Category Theory of Aristotle to the Family Resemblance Theory of Wittgenstein and to Rosch's experiment of category, all of the category theories have laid great foundation for people to recognize the essences and features of various things. Therefore, category theories also contribute a lot to the preparation work before interpretation.Through means of analysis, comparison and examples etc, the thesis further defines the categories of preparation work before interpretation, with an aim to bring forth effective methodology of preparation work for different categories of interpretation.
