The thesis tries to study the impact of Sherlock Holmes' Detective Stories by Conan Doyle on the composition of detective stories in the modern China, taking Hathorne' s Detective Stories for example. There are no detective stories in China before they were introduced. And the author gives her own definition of detective stories in Introduction.The thesis consists of three parts, the first of which analyses the surroundings of its translation and recipient culture at that times. When it was translated in Chinese, Cheng Xiaoqing was so deeply influenced that he began his own study and composition of detective stories with the spread of those translated stories. In the second part, the author tries to give a comparative study on ways of narration, arrangement of characters, culture of law and structures of the two works. And the author finds and mentions the peculiarity Hathorne' s Detective Stories in contrast with Conan Doyle's. At last this thesis conclude the merits and demerits of Hathorne' s Detective Stories in terms of spread, social influence as well as the structure and plot. Then in Conclusion the author illustrates the social and academic value of the thesis.As to the methodology, the thesis should owe its study to French School in Comparative Literature, especially, Doxologie, with the help of which the thesis analyses it from a new angle of view.
