The Course Of Recipients' Mentality In Transition Period

As an important contemporary American writer, John Updike was introduced into China by chance in 1975. It was after 1978 that he was introduced into China more formally. And with the progress of China's reform and opening, research about Updike also entered a period of prosperity. In this process, we can see that domestic reception about Updike went along with China's modern social transition, and showed different characteristics at different stage. And in-depth exploration of the reasons behind its acceptance, we can find recipients' different mentality in different social history period, and different mentality of persons of different status in the same period. Thus virtually the entire history of recipients' mentality in China's transition period will be held. Specifically, the recipients' mentality roughly experienced a process which was from the unified criticism in the period after Cultural Revolution to anger and spree in the economy reform establishing period and to each taking his own way in the economy firmly establishing period.This thesis consists of three parts:In the first part, materials about Updike in China between 1975 to 1985 is concluded and analyzed. From that the only one mode of introduction and research about Updike is obtained and the express had the same inclination. This trait relates with the phenomenon in China's literature theory fields after Cultural Revolution which is still a unity nearly separated, relates with the less influence in foreign literature research fields by the frontier theory , and also relates with the only planned research mode. The recipients'(which includes introducters , publishers and researchers )mentality was the strongly unified criticism.In the second part, materials about Updike in China between 1986 to 1993 is concluded and analyzed. From that the separating of introduction and research is obtained. Different rulers was used by different recipients, and the methods of research were also viarous. One part of recipients conveyed great anger about the society while another part conveyed spree after getting rid of control and others showed their desire for earning money without saying.In the third part, materials about Updike in China between 1994 and 2006 is concluded and analyzed. The characteristics of introduction and research in this period are multiple, extensive and dialogical. This is in connection with the globlelization of the world and the close communication between different countries. Because of the application of mordern technology especially the use of the internet, the readers had more room to express therir own words. Different recipients express different feelings regardlessly.In the end, there is a conclusion .Through summing up the whole process of reception about Updike, the process of recipients' psychology was clear, and the quantity of recipients have increased. Better understand about the transition period of China will be reached by disclosing the inner reason of this reception which is the transformation of people's status in the society.
