The Manifestation Of Bel Canto In The Musical West Side Story And The Phantom Of The Opera

This thesis focus on the application about Bel canto in the musical, and it takes two classical works West Side Story and The Phantom Of The Opera for example, giving the detailed research about the specific manifestation of Bel canto in these two musicals. This thesis divided into five parts: introduction, the first, second, and third chapter, conclusion.The introduction summarizes the achievement achieved by West Side Story and The Phantom Of The Opera, and points out the present research situation of musical singing as well as the goal and significance of writing this thesis. The first chapter is the elaboration of musical's and opera's definition, generalizing the formation and the development of musical and opera, as well as the relationship between them. The second chapter mainly elaborates the type of vocal music performance of musical and Bel canto. In this chapter I first points out the multiplication of musical style can result in the multiplication of musical singing manner. And Bel canto as the main or even the only singing manner in the opera will become one of the important forms in the musical. The third chapter gives us the dissertation about Bel canto's specific manifestation in West Side Story and The Phantom Of The Opera. First, it presents the classical opera style shown by these two musicals, and then educes that Bel canto is mainly used in them. Finally, I use a large amount of words to elaborate how the famous recitative and aria in West Side Story and The Phantom Of The Opera are shown by Bel canto. In conclusion, I indicate the development of Bel canto in musical. And because the musical develops very quickly, Bel canto will develop in order to adjust to the development of the musical.
