In Search For Imaginary Homelands

Wu Mi was a Chinese intellectual with a special mental structure. And hisChinese translations of Mathew Arnold, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Christina Rossettiand Winliam Thackeray's works show us the uniqueness of his spiritual world. Thecollapse of the Culture Review School served as an impetus for his search for the finalsavior of his soul. His inside self suffering much from the reality, Wu Mi had tounbosom himself through his search for the image of the other, which decided theroad for his spiritual search for goodness and beauty. This thesis combs a lot ofhistorical data related to the relationship between Wu Mi and British literature, andthen analyzes the communications between Wu Mi, Arnold and other British writerson levels of both reality and spirit, and penetrates into the hidden spiritual world ofWu Mi.This thesis falls into three chapters. Chapter One is mainly on the influence ofthe collapse of the Culture Review School as a scholarly community, reflecting uponWu Mi's cultural concepts as well ashis spiritual world with transcendentalcharacteristics. Chapter Two is to interpret Wu Mi's binary character which is bothpersevering and sensitive, and to discuss Arnold and Shelley's role in theconstruction of Wu Mi's spiritual world. Chapter Three is on Rossetti andThackeray's role in the transcending process of Wu Mi's transcending self and thenature of Wu Mi's spiritual ideal.
