This thesis is aimed at objectively studying the prose of Liu Baiyu at his old age with historical and aesthetic analysis approach, combining the Chinese contemporary history of prose. Through a comprehensive analysis of Liu Baiyu's papers, diaries and prose, this thesis hopes to probe into his aesthetic traits containing in the world of prose. By comparing his prose of old age with the prose in the 50s and 60s, this thesis tries to make a conclusion about his constant pursuit and new exploration in his artistic creation. Since Liu Baiyu's aesthetic characteristics are based on modern trend and fashion, his aesthetic option, his constant way of thinking, and the creation of image. L iu Baiyu's prose in his old ages mainly focuses on maintaining the essential style of boldness and wildness and at the same time adding some new characteristics of calmness and stableness with the emphasis on the diversity of life and society. Moreover, Liu Baiyu's prose at his old age also expresses a certain deep anxiety about the society and his passion in exploring the secrets of nature and life through his increasing pursuit of profound artistic beauty. This thesis also puts the prose of Liu Baiyu at his old age in the context of the 80s and 90s, attempting to find out the problems in his prose and the predicament in his times.
