The deliberate self-harm and suicide committed by young students is a personal tragedy and family misfortune, as well as a shocking social problem. So probing into the causes of the young students' self-harm and suicide becomes very necessary. The causes are absolutely not only one. Among various causes, family is doubtless a most sensitive varible for the young students'self-harm and suicide. Family, as a basic primary relationship and the most microcosmic social system, has a ubiquitous effect on the young students, and this study is analyzing and probing into what aspects affect the self-harm and suicide committed by the young students. In view of the standard and unity of the investigation material, this study excludes completed suicide, only place emphasis on the influence affected by family system on the suicidal tendencies and non-lethal suicidal behavior of the young students.The writer has surveyed 1775 young students at nine primary or middle schools, colleges in six cities in Hunan Province, and drawn the following conclusions: As a whole, the rate of the young students' suicidal tendencies and non-lethal suicidal behavior are rather high, reaching respectively 16.6% and 2%. On one hand, the young students' suicidal tendencies and non-lethal suicidal behavior vary greatly because of their own factors. Among their own factors, sex, educational level, psycho-condition, the degree of confidence and behavior independence greatly affect the young students' suicidal tendencies. While their non-lethal suicidal behavior is affected mainly by educational level, psychological healthy condition, ideal or insiration, study motive and behavior indepence. On the other hand, the young students' suicidal tendencies and non-lethal suicidal behavior vary greatly also because of their family's factors. Among the family's factors, the family prestige, the family's regional nature, the family's function and family relationship have a marked effect on the young students'suicidal tendencies, while the family's power, the family's regional nature, the family's structure and relationship have a notable impcct on the young students' non-lethal suicidal behavior. Among the above-listed family factors, family's regional nature and family relationship have a remarkable effect on both young students' tendencies and their non-lethal suicidal behavior.On the basis of the above conclusions, this study makes a brief and further inguiry into the following investigatable aspects: Whether and how the family factors affect the stage, order, harmanization and coordination of the young students' suicidal tendencies and their non-lethal suicidal behavior; Whether and how the family factors relate to the young students' own factors.Finally, aiming at the problems found in this study, the wtiter puts forward some preventive actions and measures on how to prevent young students suicidal tendencies and behavier, as fo!!ows: reducing the distinction of strata between family systems; constructing the harmonious family relationships; making perfect the family's socialization function; interfering in time actively in suicide crisis.
