On Literary Terms' Validating In Literary Theory In The Early Twentieth Century

Nouns validating is a basic approach to the theory of scientific literature (conceptualization, terminology and proposition). This paper mainly explores the background of literary terms'validating , why and how it was gradually standardized and initially formed in 1920s, so as to verify the importance of the terms of modern literary theory in transition.The first chapter cleares up issues of terms'validating and inspects its background from technology noun to literary one, through the discussions of institutions, the concern from individual scholars and civil society, and unified translation by governments and educational institutions.The second chapter takes Novel Monthly as an example of validating of the literary terms and inspects the reasons for the production of the validating consciousness. The appearance of New Literature Movement and the journal of the new literature, Novel Monthly, the readers'eagerness for literary term reunification, and the influence of other disciplines'terms, are all the factors that directly caused this consciousness. The literary translation reunification has been the concern of many people proposed firstly by Zheng Zhenduo since 1921 to the great debate in 1923. Newspapers appealled to the public so strongly that it has been a turning point of the literary terms'validating in the depth and penetration.Because Novel Monthly is important in introducing, translating and disseminating modern literary theory, the awareness to inspect literary terms is bound to be better understanding.The third chapter analyses Renxu academic and literary term institutionalization. If the discussions by scholars in magazines and newspapers aroused general attention to literature terms, the stress on new literature and literature courses introduction provided a guarantee of external powers to the validating of literature nouns further. It makes room for language to speak, terms'validating and literary to discuss or teach, while literature terms'validating is guaranteed by means of Renxu system. As a result, there were a large number of teaching introductions to literature, disseminating standardized literary theory discourse, and a systematic and comprehensive dictionary of literature finally in the late 1920s.The fourth chapter introduces that adaptations of literary theory materials and dictionaries provide an opportunity for the unified literary terms to enter into classroom and community. Term unification, including the unity of name and connotation, initially formed at the same time. If the adaptations of literature teaching material provide condition for term reunification further, the compilation of literature dictionary marks initial shape of literary terms audited.The generation and development of modern literary theories accords with the scientific standards in all aspects. And literature terms'validating is the most basic and fundamental work in the process. It can be found that modern literary theory is advancing along such a scientific and standard road through the work of terms'validating in 1920s on the whole. It is the initial completion of the late literary terms'validating in the 1920s that lays the foundation of Chinese modern literary theory.
