Hayao Miyazaki: The Great Achiever Of Japanese Anime

Japanese anime has its own artistic style with national features. From this point of view, this paper discusses the distinctive contribution of Hayao Miyazaki. Except the introduction and conclusion, the paper is divided into three chapters.Chapter One is mainly about Hayao Miyazaki's personal experiences and his writing chronological table from which we could better understand how an anime master has grown up and how his growing conditions affect his writing. While his chronological table clearly reflects the development of his writing style and the consistent spirit in his works along several decades.Chapter Two contains three sections, which discuss the epic character in Japanese anime art on behalf of Hayao Miyazaki. Japanese anime has deep and extensive relation to epic art, and epic art has extremely profound effect on it, either in the attitude towards the relationship between human beings and nature, or the topic selection, or the final value orientation, or the self-realization. In the exterior stylistic form, that influence is especially widespread and obvious. Dated from Tezuka Osamu, most important works of Japanese anime have more or less shown the constitutes of a certain epic stylistics. In those works, the interior epic characters consist of the most important part of the artistic connotation. Even we could further say that as a completely commercial public cultural product, Japanese anime could preserve the vigorously creative ability of art during a long period and create the elegant artistic works, which are closely related to the powerful epic tradition in Japanese anime culture.Chapter Three includes three sections. Centered by the modernization, this chapter discusses the reflection and self-examination for modern cartoon by Japanese cartoon on behalf of Hayao Miyazaki, which are in terms of the reflection of modern values, the reflection of various organization forms in modern society, and the self-examination of modern scientific technology. Values relate to the human natures in the deepest level. We could say that, where there is a value orientation, there is a kind of an actual life. One of the fairly important elements of Japanese cartoon lies in the life experience changes caused by the changes of the core values in people's minds. Many Japanese cartoonists have paid attention to the brand-new life experiences arising as the new organization form in modern society. They made good use of those materials to create the relatively new and impulsive plots, or based on those to rethink the special living trouble of modern people. On the other hand, thinking on the status of scientific technology in modern civilization system and thinking on the influence of scientific technology in human living conditions are also the important contents of Japanese anime. There is no doubt that Hayao Miyazaki is a unique and intensive one among numerous directors in terms of thinking and self-reflection on those aspects.
