Jue Xin is the most typical image that had ever been shaped by Ba Jin in his "Torrents" Trilogy. From the perspective of either historic depth or realistic significance, Jue Xin is a typical representative of his times. This thesis aims to grasp the artistic connotation of Jue Xin's image, sense this figure comprehensively, and expose the diversity of his personality in full range. This thesis contains four parts:The historic retrospection of study in Jue Xin's imageThe diversity of Jue Xin's personalityThe comparison between Jue Xin and other similar figuresConclusionThe first part mainly focuses on the retrospection of study in Jue Xin's image. The author summarizes the study status of various periods by analyzing representative points of view, indicating the simplification tendency in this study and coming up with the opinion that Jue Xin was an"intermediate"in the"transition"period. The second part aims to analysis the complexity and diversity of Jue Xin's mind and personality. From the perspective of personality, Jue Xin, the so called"Round Figure", appears to have two different sides: one side is obedience and compromise, while the other is honesty and rebellion. From the perspective of social revolution, the features lying in the alternation of old and new society were deeply branded in Jue Xin's personality. And from the perspective of culture, Jue Xin is a composition of old and new cultures, being impacted and influenced by both old and new cultures. From the point of family status, Jue Xin is the"Key Figure"in his family with born responsibility, which also generates moral problems for him. From psychology, Jue Xin has undergone various mental conflicts, firstly the conflict between the sense of role and the sense of individual, secondly the conflict between"id"and"superego", so he has to endure pains in such psychological conflicts. The third part emphasizes on the comparison between Jue Xin and other eldest sons in Chinese family, exposing the similar experiences and personalities of these eldest sons. The author also points out that the tragedies of eldest sons are actually the tragedy of traditional Chinese culture and the tragedies of modern Chinese intellectuals with high senses of traditional culture. The conclusion part discusses the variety of Jue Xin's image. Jue Xin reflects the social background, so he is a very successful figure.
