Sula is the second novel of Toni Morrison, who is a famous black woman writer in America. Morrison depicts several female figures with vivid characters in Sula. As a character of the old generation of black women, Eva suffers a lot, fighting against the fate continuously. Her spontaneous rebellious spirit is forced by the cruel reality. Her behavior and words has great effect on the later generation and other people in the black community as well. She acts as the spiritual guide in a certain degree. As a figure of rebellious Satan, Sula has quite a different comprehension on freedom and self-identity from others. Due to the extremely rebellious nature, she becomes a"marginal person"pushed aside by the majority. Sula , the"rebellious flower", keeps her short rebellious trip to the end lonely. Nel contrasts to Sula .Whether to be together or separate, Nel is affected by Sula a lot. Nel goes out of the maze of self-identity after experiencing a devious process. She shakes off the yoke which binding up black women finally. Morrison shows her close attention on the future destiny of black people while she creates these female characters painstakingly. She keeps on exploring the outlet of black people, shows the whole outline of the development of the black community, and in a form of art, she expresses their painful voices which is oppressed in American literature for a long time, by representing the development and change of history, destiny and characters of the figures. She writes in a new and fresh way, using a variety of postmodern writing skills to express the suffering of the black people. Morrison's novels lead to a flourishing and splendid aspect of the black female literature. This thesis takes three female characters in Sula and Morrison into a whole consideration. These women's rebellious voices interweave together and form a melody of"Quartet of Rebellion".
