The new sensual school, the independent modernism school in the history of the Modern Chinese Literature, was prosperous from late 1920's to early 1930's in Shanghai, represented by writers like Liu Naou, Mu Shiying and Shi Zhecun . For the first time the writers of this school try to observe and describe the metropolitan city, Shanghai, from the aspects of modernism. The novelty of their works lies in the original and modern approach employed by writers of this school in describing the social relationship of various people in this city. The new sensual school, in way of introducing the west modern literature to the modernity of Chinese novels and searching the common points from the Japanese new sensual school, uses skills of conscious stream and techniques in movie-photographing for reference in the description of the complicated human consciousness. In their works the direct and indirect inner monologues are applied in turn. The careful psycho-analysis unfolds the scattered and organized characters' psychological process. The physical impression of sense brings the new style of words and phrases in Chinese literature. All sorts of interior conflicts and struggle, modern feelings are reflected by the ugly, void, deeply worried metropolitan life and human strong sense of sexual desire. The skill of time and space montage is used in the novels, interlocking with the characters' flowing consciousness and reaches the effect movie picture and deeply carves the characters' inner world. The previous researches about the new sensual school paid little attention to the colors in the novels. The amount of colors words appeared in the novels reaches a hundred kinds, which shows the different brilliance and degrees of saturation. The colors words describing the colorful metropolis and people, helps us understand the characters' consciousness and motion well in the novels. White, black and red are the three, appeared mostly in the novels. These color words enjoy rich implications in meaning about the metropolis and the women in modem society. The opposite color, white and black, implying the sense of terror and mystery, matches the characteristic of the strange fantasy of the novels. The visual perception theory created the possibility between the stream of consciousness and the color words in common. There are also examples of this case, but just in a few quantities.
