| Law is omnipresent in our life. It is embodied in language, that is, language is the carrier of law. Vagueness is one of the important characteristics of language, so the law will definitely be influenced by vagueness in language. This thesis is going to analyze vagueness in legal language from semantic and pragmatic perspectives and the reason for the vagueness in legal language, classify the vagueness in legal language from the semantic perspectives, expatiate on the positive and negative function of the vagueness in legal language.This thesis is made up of seven parts. Chapter 1 gives a brief introduction to vagueness in legal language. Chapter 2 sketches out the background and the current situation of the legal language. The characteristics of legal language are also included in this chapter. Chapter 3 deals with the definition of fuzzy linguistics. Chapter 4 analyzes the reason for the vagueness in legal language, and which situation can vagueness in legal language be used. Chapter 5 classifies the vagueness in legal language from the semantic perspectives. Chapter 6 expatiates on the positive function of the vagueness in legal language. Chapter 7 expatiates on the negative function of the vagueness in legal language, and how to avoid the vagueness. The last chapter is a summary of this thesis and a discussion on the implication of my research in this field.The author concludes the whole dissertation and points out that the legal language is a kind of customary language. One of the important characteristics is exactness. But in some situations, fuzzy expressions have an important role in the usage of the legal language. It is the aim of the dissertation to use fuzzy language properly in legal field from linguistic point of view. |
