Tanbūr, a plucked string instrument of chordophones, is widely distributed and used in many countries and areas, bearing musical culture features of different places. It is also used widely in the south and north of Xinjiang where Uygurs are densely populated. Combined with different cultures of Xinjiang, it puts up various features for flexible performance and its rich playlist. Therefore, Tanbūr owns an important role in the traditional music of Uygurs.Based on previous research works and field investigation of the author, using comprehensive theories and methods of ethnomusicology, the science of musical history, the science of musical instrument, anthropology and other subjects, this paper makes a relatively all-around study of Tanbūr in the south and north of Xinjiang and advances some new viewpoints.The whole paper can be divided into six part:Part 1, the preface, based on the summary of Tanbūr research works and according to the author's field investigation, puts forward the author's visual angle and working method.Part 2 summarizes Tanbūr's background related to geography, ecology, nationality structure, culture of Xinjiang and so on, believing that to some extent, the music of Tanbūr represents the integration of Uygur culture.Part 3 describes the shape, reformation and the characteristics of performance form of Tanbūr, briefly sums up and analyses the appellation of Tanbūr in Chinese documents and achievements in research, and checks resemble name of Tanbūr family of foreign languages'documents against the former.Part 4 discusses the distribution of Tanbūr and the instruments of Tanbūr family in the world and check Uygur's Tanbūr against other instruments of Tanbūr family, then trys to look for relation among them.Part 5 is according to the author's field investigations conducted in Kashgar, Hotan and Yily area, briefly describes living condition and typical music of Tanbūr, then expounds the playing skill and notation of Tanbūr.Part 6 chiefly introduces Uygurs'Tanbūr accomplished performer and musicians who pushed the development of Tanbūr forward.At last the author holds that the development of Tanbūr in Xinjiang is the result of Uygur culture absorbing exortic instruments. Tanbūr is the result of Uygurs'creative work.
