Yu Yue was a great scholar of Confucian classics in the Qing Dynasty. He had created a lot of stories written in classical Chinese. His Stories written in Youtai Villa was the representative collection of them, which hold an important position in the novelistic circle in his age and deserved research.The present paper is composed of four chapters. Chapter One is the study of Yu Yue's life experience and pedigree, focused on the influence of his demotion and his pursuit of leaving lasting reputation by writing.Chapter Two is the study of Yu Yue's family and social contact in literary circle , revealing their influence on Stories written in Youtai Villa, for the death of his wife Yao Wenyu was the main motivation of the creation of this work, while his friends and disciples provided with abundant literary materials.Chapter Three is the research of Yu Yue's attitude towards novel creation. Yu Yue valued the novel and thought highly of it. He emphasized on its function of enlightenment, showed great interest in the extraordinary contents and paid much attention to the stylistic transmutation of the novel.Chapter Four is the study of the work Stories written in Youtai Villa. This chapter focused on the research of the stories' origins in terms of their relations to the affairs in his age, the influence of other works and the sources from things he heard, together with the analysis on the contents and achievements of the work. |
