On The News Translation From The Perspective Of The Science Of Cultural Translation

The science of cultural translation is a newly-emerged science aiming at conducting culture-oriented studies for the translation activity, which shows the trend of translation studies both at home and abroad. In the informationalized community, news translation is an absolutely necessary means for the spread of world news and plays a more and more significant role. It is influenced by the cultural differences more intensively due to its involvement in the media operation. Based on this view, this thesis holds that the science of cultural translation is of great theoretical and practical significance to news translation, and tries to apply culture-oriented approaches to news translation studies in a creative way.First, the previous researches on the news translation and on the science of cultural translation are analyzed, and a lack of cultural approach in news translation studies is identified. It is pointed out that the topic selected by the thesis is to help fill this gap and provide a new way of thought and perspective for the further studies of news translation.Second, in view of the research object of the thesis, the key factors of news, namely, the definition, content, receptor and manners of transmission are expounded in detail. The relationship between news and translation is analyzed and the features, subject and basic principles of news translation are discussed as well. It is put forth that the particularity of news translation not only opens a wider space for the science of cultural translation to participate but also sets the requirements for it to follow.Third, from the viewpoint of the theoretical basis of the thesis, the emergence, object and methods of the science of cultural translation are studied. And it is suggested that the current studies of news translation are mainly based on its linguistic characteristics, such as the characteristics of the lexicon, grammar, rhetoric and style, few studies are under the theoretical instruction of cultural translation. Consequently, the source language culture can not be well-handled by the journalist-translator and sometimes the cultural interference is difficult to avoid. Moreover, in view of the existing culture-bound problems in news translation, the significance and function of the science of cultural translation are explored.Fourth, the validity of the topic is demonstrated through the application of the theories of the science of cultural translation in concrete news translation activities. Some selected case studies offered in the thesis show that under the direction of the science of cultural translation, a journalist-translator can recognize the phenomena such as cultural equivalence, differences and gaps implied in Chinese and English news, and take corresponding culture-oriented translation strategies. To the journalist-translator, it is an effective way to improve the quality of his or her translation versions with the awareness of these phenomena and the help of employing different culture-oriented translation strategies.Finally, the major findings of the thesis are summarized and the future tendency of the study in this respect is forecasted and expected.To sum up, based on the analysis of news translation from the perspective of the science of cultural translation, the thesis, different from the previous studies which mostly concern with the linguistic insights, is to emphasize the necessity and importance of studying news translation in light of the science of cultural translation and to provide the culture-oriented strategies for news translation. In this way, it intends to reduce the cultural interference, improve the quality of translation versions, and make full use of the news translation in the mass communication.
