In American, First Lady post derives from the President post, but it is not in official system. So its duties have no legal requirement. Its development decided by the society, the traditional values and personal decision. Flanklin Roosevelt's wife Eleanor Roosevelt plays an important role in the development of First Lady post. Before Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady primarily played a role as the hostess of the White House. Eleanor Roosevelt actively involved in public activities in the political, social, diplomatic and other fields. She created a lot of precedents, and made the image of the previous first ladys who are just as the hostess of the White House changed completely. So the functions of American First Lady have a great change. She set a good example for the future's First Lady who have tremendous impact both inside and outside the White House. This thesis consists of five parts:The first part mainly introduces American First Lady's duties before Eleanor Roosevelt. They are mainly in charge of the social activities of the White House.The second part introduces how Eleanor Roosevelt changed the function of First Lady duties during her period of First Lady. This is mainly discussed about her activities in family, political, social, diplomatic and other areas. In the White House Eleanor mainly assumes to social activities, but she did not completely follow the road of traditional First Lady; Her political activities covers the function of holding official post, helping the presidential election, influencing the President's decisions; Her social activities mainly consists of four aspects: protecting the black civil rights, women's rights and safeguarding the interests of youth, helping poor population; Her diplomatic activity focused on Eleanor's visit to England and South Pacific Ocean; And her other activities: writing, broadcasting, speech and holding press conferences.The third part analyzes why Eleanor Roosevelt can change the functions of the First Lady, including objective and subjective reasons. The objective reasons include the First Lady of the historical customs, family values, the ambiguous legal standards of the First Lady post, the objective needs of the times. Subjective factors include their husbands and other factors to help the people.The fourth part discusses the main impact of Eleanor Roosevelt changing the function of First Lady. She establishes the functions of morden First Lady, that is, as holding official post, the President's political partner, the government policy of participant, social activities advocate, human rights advocate and diplomat.
