Since 1980's Mr. Lu Chen as an artist and educator first proposed a statement of 'to develop on the modern basis' on ink figure painting. His teaching system of modern ink figure painting is centered on the development of creativity, on the study of plastic modeling and stresses the detailed steps in basic teaching, finally helps students to become a kind of artistic creators of both continuing heritage culture and reflecting modern life.This paper starts with the formation of traditional realist modeling of figures in the ink painting, and then briefly analyzes several ways in its development, aiming at exploring Mr. Lu Chen's adjustment in the new era when facing such academic tradition for its adaptability. The paper in turn describes the important points of Lu Chen's teaching in terms of the author's practice in ink painting. It lists several items such as sketch drawing, line sketch, sketch in ink, ink formation, and scenes in ink as the study objects. The paper also uses his works and his students' ones as data for image analysis, in order to present the wholeness of his teaching, and show his inner line of teaching ideas: on the modern basis on how to learn from the western and Chinese artistic resources, modern and ancient, and on how to combine realism with expressionism.
