| China's classical painting, which is independent and of great distinction, has passed on for thousands of years. Great efforts from painters of every generation and dynasty impel Chinese painting to form a different genre to other countries, outshining in the forest of the art of the world. What's more, it spreads to the neighboring countries and the west, exerting great influence on western modern painting. Since western material civilization goes far beyond China, the influence of western painting reflects on China's painting conversely. Especially around the May Fourth Movement, a number of intellectuals studied abroad in America and Europe or Japan. Coming back after graduation, they have made certain contribution to Chinese traditional painting's reform and innovation. And it enabled great changes to China's painting compared with the tradition. The continuous and constant exchanges between Chinese and Western painting nourish each other and form a good tendency for mutual reciprocity. Based on the comparison between Chinese and western graphic art's, following the path of modern Chinese painting's development, this article would discuss the relation of foundation and application in both Chinese and westem painting, plus, the practical meaning of western painting foundation in Chinese traditional painting.Through the comparison of paintings from east and west, taking case analysis as example, this article discusses the "based on traditional Chinese values and aided with western application" for the first step.
