The thesis seeks to bring Li Rui's creative work into the system of Chinese country novel and made a re-evaluation and criticism. Using the critical methods of detailed study of the novel itself, comparison and case study, the thesis makes an all-round analysis of his work to get a profound and unique assessment of the writer himself and reveals his meaning in literary history.The thesis is composed of three parts. In the first part it sorts out the course of his novel creation, argues the sprits of Chinese country novel that Li Rui's novel inherits and his concern over Chinese history and Contemporary country world.In the second part it assesses the spiritual connotation embodied in Li Rui's work. His novel is full of thinking and questions on history and the present. He refuses to add poetic flavour to the bitterness and sufferings of the present. The constantly appearing Revolution in his work is another theme that Li Rui questions history and enlightenment. The focus of his question on revolution is a theme of enlightenment that trouble the intelligentsia since modern times. Li Rui questions and examines enlightenment. From the consideration and question of revolution and enlightenment, Li Rui interrogates the relationship between the intelligentsia and the whole modern civilization.As a writer who conscientiously pursues language, Li Rui practices contemporary Chinese in his creative work, which is his another contribution to country novel. In part three starting from his experiment in colloquial style of his writing, the thesis analyses his revolt and resistance against cultural colonization and his promotion and display of native culture, in order to reveal the unique value and meaning of Li Rui's country writing.
