Relationship between the father and the son is one of the most common, typical and significant ethnical relationships. The"father"and the"son"are in the picture now and then in novels. The objectives of this thesis, based on the research of the writing on the relationship between the father and the son in New Period (1978-2006), are to analyze the images of fathers and sons, dig out its meanings from the perspectives of culture, history and nationality respectively, and interpret the ethnical and narrative significance of the writing on the relationship between the father and the son.Besides the conclusion, the thesis can be divided into four chapters.The first chapter is an introduction, which gives an overview of all the writing on the relationship between fathers and sons in the novels of the twentieth century, against which the research concerned is also reviewed.In Chapter Two, the thesis deals with the images of fathers and sons in the writing of the relationship between them, focusing on the analysis of exterior images. For the son, the father is a tender consanguinity, the representative of authority and order in the family, the doer of power and desire, as well as the undertaker of all the pains and responsibilities; however, the young son, under the protection of his father, no matter he intends to inherit or surpass, submit or protest, is usually the suitor of freedom and desire as a new power and individual. Chapter three is concerned with the significance of the writing on the relationship between fathers and sons. There are a great number of"father"images in our era, who is a"pioneer father"on the top of reform wave, a"revolutionary father"in bloody battles, as well as a"farmer father"rises up on the vast field. Those"Capitalized Fathers", actually, are the spokesmen of the authors to rejuvenate China and sympathize with the common people.Therefore, such kind of writing on the relationship between fathers and sons becomes a gorgeous narrative of a whole nation. Meanwhile, there are many wide differences and conflicts between traditional fathers and modern sons in the aspects of values and ethnics, etc in our society hit severely by modernism. The former one mainly refers to consumption and moral values, while the latter one is represented by the tense generation relationship, a correction and supplement of the traditional ethnical relationship between fathers and sons. Chapter Four is a narrative survey of the writing on the relationship between fathers and sons, which, under the previous analysis, interprets and digs out the meanings of the ethnical relationship between fathers and sons from such four aspects as background, narrative point of view, narrative ethnics, and narrative patterns.
