America is a multicultural country. Multi-relief in religion is an important part of American culture. As a liberal thought in religion, Unitarianism, which was taken from Western Europe to New England by Protestants, develops and strengthen under specially political and economic environment in North America colony. Meanwhile, it influences American politics, economy and culture. Particularly, the liberalism in religion and the principle of American foundation whose core is liberalism and individualism affect each other. These promote the process of American democracy and multi-culture. From this point, Unitarianism is a miniature of American culture. Thus, it is significant to inspect the development of American Unitarianism and uncover the law of Unitarianism. And it helps us comprehend American society and culture.The preface introduces the situation of current research about American Unitarianism, summarizes briefly the relevant research of domestic and foreign academic communities.The paper is made up of four charters:Part1 reviews the definition of Unitarianism by encyclopedia.Mainly I introduce the definition in the"The New Encyclopedia Britannica"and"the Encyclopedia of Politics and Religion".Part 2 analyses the background of American Unitarianism. I trace the European source of Unitarianism, At the same time, I review special background in North American Colony.Part 3 narrates the development and evolution of American Unitarianism. Its contents contain the outline of American Unitarianism in different periods and primarily social activities: anti-slavery and peace.Part 4 discuss the insights into American Unitarianism. I make the correct appraisal, point out its role in American society,and find out shortcomings.The conclusion summarizes briefly the full paper, and draws some views on American Unitarianism: As liberalism, Unitarianism instructs American Revolution and the foundation of America; As value system, Unitarianism affects the principle of individualism in American society and culture.
